Sample Search: Provide a comprehensive statistical summary of the current trading value of a 7 year, 6 3/8% interest bond issued by the IBM Corp. on June 15, 1993.

Finding the Code:

Step 1
  • Looking for Bond codes in Datastream is very similar to looking up equity codes. To find Bond codes, enter CODE into the "Program Number" area in the main Datastream window. In the resulting new program window, you will be prompted to enter keywords to describe the item code you are looking for. Enter IBM and press tab to skip down to the following lines. Next, indicate that you are looking specifically for bonds by entering B, and only U.S. currency series by entering U$. When you have pressed the enter key an alphabetical list of matching items will appear in a new screen from which you will select the item, IBM Corp. 1993 6 3/8% 15/06/00, with the code 390817.

Finding the Program:
  • To find a concise statistical summary of Bond information, select Reports as your type of request. Next, choose bonds as your type of data and select the first of the available programs under these headings: Key items for one bond. Press Enter. Upon selecting this item, you will be prompted to enter the code for your specific bond price series. Enter 390817 and press enter. Summary data for your IBM bond should appear in tabular form, including current price, clean price, gross price, redemption yield, interest yield, etc. If you accidentally entered an improper code, the program will pause and allow you to enter your code again.


Things to Remember

  • The Bonds section is a combination of corporate bonds and governmental bonds. Many governmental bonds can be found under the section for Interest Rates.
  • Datasteam divides its bonds into 2 sections: bonds coming directly from a country and those covered by other organizations. The following countries have direct bond information: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, and the United States. Datastream also obtains data from organizations such as JP Morgan, Lehman Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Paribas, Salomon Brothers, and Societe Generale. Brady bonds are included.
