The Economic Census

The Economic Census originally started out as part of the general Decennial Census. It has changed and grown over the years in both scope and coverage. In 1997 the Census moved over from the Standard industry classification (SIC) to the North American Industry Classification System (NAICS). Today the Economic census is available in its entirety on the web and provides a snapshot of the economy and the millions of business establishments that operate in the United States.

Census Series

Census of manufactures

The first census of manufactures covered the year 1809. Between 1809 and 1963, a census was conducted at periodic intervals. Since 1967 it has been taken every 5 years (for years ending in "2" and "7"). Data was published as part of the Decennial Census until 1900. Data and reports for later years were published separately under various titles and can be found in Firestone LIbrary (DSS) Decennial Census, shelved by year of census.
