URB 305/SAS 351/AAS 364/ARC 325: Race, Caste, and Space: Architectural History as Property History

Census Overview

Census publications are primary sources that can inform humanities research by providing specific details about a particular location. Some of the topics typically covered in censuses include: urban vs. rural, migration, gender, age, marital status, number of children, citizenship, literacy education, nationality or ethnicity, language(s) spoken, religion, employment, occupation, income, race, housing structures, etc. The choice of queries can change over time and is influenced by myriad factors such as colonization status, societal norms, international organizational influences, and internal politics. While the information is typically primarily tabular, census publications sometimes include narratives that provide an important context for the figures presented.
