About This Guide

This guide presents basic and specialized resources for conducting research on American music—all the styles, genres, cultures, creators and social aspects of music that have flourished in the United States from the 1600s to the present. This guide covers all formats of music research and performance: books, essay collections, articles in scholarly journals and the popular press, scores, sound recordings, video, electronic resources, and key websites. The guide also provides some tips for searching.
