Data Management Tool (DMPTool)

What is DMPTool?

DMPTool is a tool for creating data management and sharing plans (DMSPs) that meet funder requirements and follow open science best practices. DMPTool can help you: 

  • Comply with funder requirements for data management and sharing
  • Create a plan quickly and easily, on your own or in collaboration with a colleague
  • Get credit and extend the reach of your research

What funders does DMPTool support? 

  • National Science Foundation (nsf.gov)
  • National Institutes of Health (nih.gov)
  • Department of Energy (DOE)
  • Institute of Museum and Library Services (imls.gov)
  • National Aeronautics and Space Administration (nasa.gov)
  • National Endowment for the Humanities (neh.gov)

The box to the right contains guidance and links to the funder requirements. And the lower box contains a fill-in-the-blank template with recommended language from the NIH.

Who should use DMPTool?

DMPTool is most helpful when preparing a formal data management and sharing plan for a grant application for federal funding. This will most likely be faculty members or principal investigators and early career researchers.

Princeton Research Data Service  (PRDS) supports the review of data management and sharing plans for federal funders. 

In DMPTool you will be able to contact PRDS directly to request feedback on your data management and sharing plan.

Getting Started

1. Go to https://dmptool.org/

2. Sign in using your Princeton email address.

3. Click Sign in with Institution (SSO)
