Annual Survey of State and Local Government Finances
This survey is the only source of nationwide, comprehensive local government finance information. It provides statistics on revenue, expenditure, debt, and assets for the 50 states and D.C. Full census is only collected every 5 years.
National League of Cities
Provide broad overview information. However, the underlying fiscal data they collect is not available to researchers.
Urban Institute - State and Local Finance Initiative
The State and Local Finance Initiative is an Urban Institute project in the Urban-Brookings Tax Policy Center. The initiative equips policymakers, citizens, and the media with tools to understand and address the fiscal challenges and opportunities facing state and local governments.
