First Published in 1996. Articles on present-day tribal groups comprise more than half of the coverage, ranging from essays on the Navajo, Lakota, Cherokee, and other large tribes to shorter entries on such lesser-known groups as the Hoh, Paugusett, and Tunica-Biloxi. Also 25 inlcludes maps.

Economic themes underlie many aspects of Native American history from the fur trade, the devastating impact of European diseases, and the taking of Native American land to the current issues of uranium mining on Navajo land and casino gambling. Yet this is the first encyclopedia to analyze Native American history against an economic background. Describing the impact of Euro-American settlement from a Native American perspective, the book profiles the economies of roughly forty Native American tribes and nations from pre-Columbian times to the present. Other entries focus on demographics, such historical issues as the Allotment Act of 1887, and modern efforts at economic development. The book provides a valuable guide to an important area in Native American Studies and American economic history. Basing entries on Native nations, the work includes peoples living in present-day Canada, Mexico, Guatemala, and the United States. Along with nation profiles, the book includes historical information on demographics, economic conditions on reservations, and the economic basis for present-day attempts to increase Native American sovereignty. A need exists for works of first reference that provide insights into both sides of Indian-white relations. This handbook is intended to help fill the need. The work will be divided regionally, with Vol. I relating events in the Southeastern Woodlands. Subsequent volumes will cover the Northeastern Woodlands, the Great Plains, and the Far West. The final volume will include a general index, bibliography, and chronology.

This book examines the treaties that promised self-government, financial assistance, cultural protections, and land to the more than 565 tribes of North America (including Alaska, Hawaii, and Canada).Prior to contact with Europeans and, later, Americans, American Indian treaties assumed unique dimensions, often involving lengthy ceremonial meetings during which gifts were exchanged. Europeans and Americans would irrevocably alter the ways in which treaties were negotiated: for example, treaties no longer constituted oral agreements but rather written documents, though both parties generally lacked understanding of the other's culture.
