ReferenceUSA. Has basic information on millions of U.S. businesses, including private companies.

Business Source Elite. SWOT analysis available for many large companies.  To access, click "Company Profiles" on the top-level menu.

Nonprofits

National Directory of Nonprofit Organizations. This source can be used to find nonprofits based upon specific criteria: total assets, income, type of activity (blood bank, religious order, community theatrical group, wildlife sanctuary or refuge, etc., etc.).  For a master list of types of activities, see the Record Layout, Descriptions, and All Codes for the Exempt Organization Master Listing from the Internal Revenue Service.

GuideStar Pro. Provides access to nonprofits' annual financials, Form 990.
