Using RefWorks at Princeton: Export to RW/EN/Zotero

ZOTERO is currently the recommended Bibliography Manager at Princeton. You can also get help with ENDNOTE.

Export citation library

Exporting/importing your citation library between EndNote, RefWorks and Zotero should be a simple process. Below are detailed instructions on how to move your citation library from one citation managment tool to another.

Export EndNote library to RefWorks

EndNote 8, 9 or 10 users:

1. Begin by creating your RefWorks account. Consider creating a new folder in RefWorks called "EndNote import" or "EndNote library" to avoid any confusion as to what you have imported and where it has gone within RefWorks.

2. From within your RefWorks account, pull down the Refernces menuand select "Import EndNote V8+ Database."

3. In the window that appears, click on the Browse button to locate and select your EndNote library--a file with a .enl extension on the end. You can also specify what folder you want to add your EndNote citations to within RefWorks.

4. Click on the Import button. RefWorks will import the citations from your EndNote library. They will appear in the "Last Imported" folder and in any folder you told RefWorks to add the citations to.

EndNote version 7 or before users:

1. In EndNote, under the Edit menu select Output Styles.

2. From the list of output styles select RefMan (RIS) Export.

Note: If you do not see this format, open the Style Manager and check the RefMan (RIS) Export format. Close the Style Manager and repeat steps 1 and 2.

3. Select the references you want to export.

4. Under the Reference menu select Show Selected (or Show All if you wish to export the entire database).

5. Under the File menu select Export.

6. A dialog box appears for you to select the location where you want to save the file. Type a file name and select a location for importing into RefWorks. Select Text as your Save As type and click Save.

7. Go into RefWorks and from the References menu select Import.

8. Select Desktop Biblio. Mgt. Software as your Import Filter and EndNote (Ref Man RIS Format) as your Database. Make sure you select the appropriate Mac or Windows version. Browse for and select the file you just created from EndNote.

9. Click on Import at the bottom of the Import window.

10. Your records should automatically appear in the Last Imported folder.

Export RefWorks library to EndNote

  1. Login to your RefWorks database if you have not already done so.
  2. Click on References and Export at the top of the screen.
  3. Click in the radio button for "All References or References From": to specify a folder.
  4. Select Bibliographic Software (EndNote, Reference Manager, ProCite) from the Export Format: choices.
  5. Click on Export to Text file....
  6. Click on File and Save As.
  7. Type your disk drive, the filename in the File Name box.
  8. Select Text from the Save As type dropdown menu.
  9. Click on Save.
  10. Next open your EndNote Library and click on File and Import.
  11. Click on Chose File at Import Data File: and select your text file.
  12. Select Refman RIS from the Import Option drop down menu.
  13. Click on Import.

Export Zotero library to RefWorks

  1. Highlight (select) the Zotero records that you wish to export.
  2. Right-click on the selection and, from the menu bar, select "Exported selected items".
  3. For the Export format choose RIS
  4. After exporting from Zotero, within RefWorks from the References pull-down menu select Import.
  5. Using the pull-down menu set the Import Filter Data to RIS Format, from the Database pull-down menu select RIS. Browse to locate the saved txt file. Then click Import.
  6. To view your imported items click the view Last Import Folder button.

Export an EndNote library to Zotero

  1. In EndNote, select “Output Styles” from the Edit menu.
  2. From the list of output styles select BibTeX.
  3. Once BibTeX is set as the format, select “Export” from the File menu. In the Export window that pops up, choose “Text Only” and hit “Save.”
  4. After exporting from EndNote, click on the icon above the left column in your Zotero pane and select “Import” from the pull-down menu. In the file system window that pops up, locate the BibTeX file you exported from EndNote and select “Open.” This should import your references into Zotero.

Export RefWorks library to Zotero

  1. In RefWorks from the References pull-down menu select Export
  2. Next select which References to Include (All References, My List, References from a folder). Then choose the Bibliographic Software option and click Export to text file.
  3. The exported file will open in a web browser window. Save the file to your computer. Under File your web browser select Save Page As. Rename it if you like, but keep the txt extension.
  4. After exporting from RefWorks click on the icon above the left column of your Zotero pane and select "Import from the pull-down menu. In the file system window that pop-ups locate the txt file you exported from RefWorks and select "Open. "This should import your references into Zotero.

Export Zotero library to EndNote

  1. Highlight (select) the Zotero records that you wish to export.
  2. Right-click on the selection and, from the menu bar, select "Exported selected items"
  3. Export format choose Refer/BibIX.
  4. A file will be created called "Exported Items.txt". Rename it if you like, but keep the txt extension.
  5. Start up EndNote and open up the library into which you want to import the citations.
  6. Select File/Import from the toolbar.
  7. For Import Data File, browse to where ever you saved the test file, and choose it.
  8. For Import Option, select EndNote Import. Click Import.
  9. Your records should now appear in the Imported References folder or in the library that is open.
