3. Qing dai zhu juan ji cheng 清 代 朱 卷 集 成 (Collection of Qing Dynasty Examination Essays)

  • These are collections of examination essays prepared by the original candidates and later copied for official examiners to read without access to the name or calligraphy of the original papers. Dating from 1700 to 1900, these collections now numbering in the hundreds of volumes are important sources for study of the literary and cultural aspects of the examinations. Including comments and rankings by the examiners, these papers allow us to reconstruct the standards used to rank candidates.

    Published in 420 volumes by Ch'eng Wen Publishing Co. (Taiwan) in cooperation with the Shanghai Library, 1993-94. The UCLA East Asian Library has this collection in storage.

  • 2. Manchu Language Examinations 滿 文 考 卷 : Hanlin academicians
  • 3. Academy Gazeteers 書 院 志 : These gazetteers included histories of the schools, scholarly tradtions associated with them, famous students and teachers who attended or taught there, and lists of patrons and donors who supported their founding and continuation.
  • 4. Private Academy Examination Papers 書 院 考 卷 :The handwritten examination papers in the UCLA Collection number several hundred and come from several important academies in South China.
