The first ten parts present chapters that focus on specific areas of music psychology: the origins and functions of music; music perception, responses to music; music and the brain; musical development; learning musical skills; musical performance; composition and improvisation; the role of music in everyday life; and music therapy. The final part examines how, in recent years, the study of music psychology has broadened to include a range of other disciplines.

Consisting of over forty essays, the volume is organized by five primary themes: Music from the Air to the Brain; "Hearing and Listening to Music"; "Making and Using Music"; "Developing Musicality"; and "Musical Meanings."

Surveys the practices, politics, and emerging frameworks of thought that now define this previously amorphous area of study. Chapters are organized in six overarching themes of Space, Time, Things, Fabric, Senses and Relationality. Each theme represents a key area of development in the visual arts and music during the second half of the twentieth century from which sound art emerged.
