HIS 414: Life-writing and History: Diaries, Memoirs and Autobiographies

If the subject/author is known

If you know the subject (and therefore author) of the autobiography:

- In the library Catalog, search by Author

   If the author has written few items, you should be able to find the autobiography quickly

   If the author is prolific, then choose Advanced Search.  In the Author field, enter the author's name; in the Subject field, enter the word Biography (in the catalog, autobiographies are entered under the world biography)

If you want an autobiography of a person from a particular class of people

If you are looking for an autobiography for an unknown person who can be described by profession, race, class, sex, etc:

- In the library Catalog, search by Subject.  Enter the word describing the type of person (e.g., African American teachers), and add the word Biography  (in the catalog, autobiographies are entered under the world biography)

   Your results will include a mix of biographies and autobiographies; you'll have to look through the list and choose
