IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT

“Principal Investigators and their Institutions are responsible for ensuring all terms and conditions of awards are met. This includes the submission of final peer-reviewed manuscripts that arise directly from their awards, even if they are not an author or co-author of the paper. Principal Investigators and their Institutions should ensure that authors are aware of and comply with the NIH Public Access Policy.”  - NIH

What Is the NIH Public Access Policy?

The NIH's Public Access Policy requires:

  • All papers resulting from NIH-funded research must be deposited in the National Library of Medicine's PubMed Central within 12 months of publication.
  • The Policy applies to all peer-reviewed articles accepted for publication on or after April 7th, 2008, arising in whole or part from direct costs paid by the NIH or NIH staff.
  • The Policy requires that these articles be accessible to the public on PubMed Central to help advance science and improve human health, and ensures that the public has access to the published results of NIH funded research.

The NIH Public Access Policy is a Term and Condition of Award for all grants and cooperative agreements

  • active in Fiscal Year 2008 (October 1, 2007- September 30, 2008),
  • and for all contracts awarded after April 7, 2008.

UPDATE - August 12, 2009

NIH Has Amended the Public Access Policy. See "Clarification on the Use of an NIHMSID to Indicate Compliance with the NIH Public Access Policy" for details.
