Examination Resources

Preparing for the ARE: Developed by the National Council of Architectural Registration Boards, this online resource offers exam guides for each division of the ARE, available in PDF format and free to download. Each exam guide contains sample multiple-choice questions (except Schematic Design), one passing and one failing solution for each sample vignette, and a list of references for further study.

LEED Professional Exam Guide: This exam guide will help you understand the steps and requirements necessary to pursue the LEED Green Associate, the LEED AP, or LEED for Homes Green Rater as well as the format and delivery of the exams. Some choose to supplement their study of the exam references and test specifications with preparatory classes, books, and other material. Among the materials available are USGBC’S exam prep publications as well as live and online trainings.

Intern Development Program Information: The NCARB Intern Development Program (IDP) identifies the comprehensive experience that is essential for the independent practice of architecture. Each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands sets its own education, experience, and examination requirements for initial and reciprocal registration in their jurisdiction. Every jurisdiction requires that interns acquire experience under the direct supervision of a registered architect for some period of time. Most of NCARB’s 54 jurisdictions have adopted the Intern Development Program (IDP) as their experience requirement for initial registration.
