The American Woman’s Home, or, Principles of Domestic Science : being a guide to the formation and maintenance of economical, healthful, beautiful, and Christian homes,  by Catharine E. Beecher and Harriet Beecher Stowe ; with a new introduction by Joseph Van Why.  Hartford, Conn. : Stowe-Day Foundation, 1975. The management of the home and the carwe of the family were considered a sacred duty for a woman, and this book was offered as a tool to enable and strengthen that work.  Further, it is a clear statement of dignity and importance of that work and to help a woman to be better prepared and equipped to carry out those duties.

A first hand account of what life for a servant who provided much of the work that enabled food and home at this time.

Aprons at one time of course had the practical purpose of protecting one's clothing - often a dress when housekeeping and cooking in the United States were traditional woman's work.  They also constituted a kind of uniform, more or less
formal, that identified those who did the housekeeping and cooking in America's homes.  Their history and use is nicely detailed here.

Today when nearly everything can and is purchased finished and ready to use, it can be difficult to understand how much of the goods and services necessary for everyday life was -- until recently -- done by hand or with rather primitive tools,  and often at home - or at least in the local community.  That largely vanished world is detailed here.

A remarkable guide to home management in the most sweeping terms.  Care of gardens and livestock, tips on foraging for wild foods, recipes for cooking the most basic homestead type foods, keeping children safe, cleaning in earth-friendly terms – all are covered in brief but practical terms.  This is New Age housekeeping spelled out.

First published in 1861 as a guide to both household management and cookery, the first was covered in some one hundred pages in the edition of 1909, where cookery took up some one thousand.  An early and  best welling guide to household matters in Victorian England and beyond.
