According to Don Skemer, Curator of Manuscripts, “the best materials that we have are the legal files of an African American freed slave—the files about which a history graduate student, Mitra Sharafi, has written a fine article that will appear in the Princeton University Library Chronicle." Correspondence by prominent African American authors is represented in the publishers' archives of Harper Bros., and Charles Scribner & Son.
The Cotsen Children's Library houses many books by and about African Americans.
